Every September many families in Lleida wonder which after-school activity to choose. Chess is one of the most complete: children can start very young, it doesn't depend on physical ability and it helps with things you notice at school and at home.
1. Focus and attention
A game requires staying alert for a long time and thinking before moving. Children learn, by playing, to keep their attention on a single task.
2. Logical thinking and planning
In chess you calculate, anticipate your opponent and make a plan: the same kind of reasoning used to solve maths problems.
3. Patience and impulse control
Moving too fast is almost always punished. Little by little they learn to wait, check and decide calmly.
4. Learning to win and to lose
Everyone loses games, even masters. Chess teaches children to accept mistakes, work out what went wrong and try again, with respect for the opponent: players shake hands before and after every game.
5. An activity for everyone
Children of any age and physical ability play on equal terms, and it's a hobby they can share with parents, grandparents and friends for life.
What age can children start?
We recommend starting from age 5, when children can keep their attention and understand the basic rules. They don't need to know how to play beforehand.
How to choose a chess school in Lleida
- Groups by age and level, so every child progresses at their own pace.
- A trial class to see if they like it before committing.
- Optional competition: club and school tournaments for those who want more.
At the Club Escacs Pardinyes Chess School we have groups from age 5 through primary and secondary school, and the first class is free. If you are a school, we also run after-school chess at your school.
