🏅 What is a GM and IM closed tournament and why it matters

How GM and IM norm tournaments work, what a norm is and what they bring to a city like Lleida.

From 30 March to 3 April the club will host GM and IM norm closed tournaments. If you've never heard of them and wonder what they are, here's a quick guide.

What is a closed tournament?

It's an invitation-only tournament, not open to everyone, where a small group of players face each other all against all (round robin format). Because the group is closed, the organisers can control who takes part, and that's what allows the results to count towards a title.

What is a norm?

To become an International Master (IM) or a Grandmaster (GM), FIDE doesn't just ask for a high rating: you have to prove it in specific tournaments. Each good result in a tournament that meets the requirements is called a norm. In broad terms:

  • You need a minimum performance during the event (higher for GM than for IM).
  • Part of your opponents must hold titles and come from different federations.
  • The tournament needs a minimum number of games and must follow FIDE regulations.
  • To earn the title you need three norms and also reach a minimum FIDE rating.

The exact requirements are set by the FIDE handbook and are reviewed from time to time, which is why each tournament has to guarantee compliance.

Why is a norm so hard to get?

Because opportunities are scarce. A player may have the level but needs a tournament with enough titled opponents from other countries, and such tournaments are rare. Many talented youngsters travel for months to find one. That's why every closed tournament that is organised is an open door.

What does a closed tournament bring to Lleida?

  • Young players with a chance to make a name. They can earn a norm without travelling far.
  • Top-level chess at home. Watching titled players up close is a unique experience, especially for the children of the school.
  • Visibility for the city. Lleida appears on the chess map and the media talk about it.
  • Inspiration. Our students see where effort and perseverance can lead.

How will we experience it at the club?

Every game is a lesson. Members and families are welcome to drop by the hall to follow the tournament and, if they wish, meet the players. Find all the details, schedule and rules on the GM and IM Closed Tournament, Easter 2026 page.

If you're a titled player or in line for a norm and want to take part in this edition or the next ones, leave your details in the interest form on that page. And if you'd like your children to train towards reaching that level one day, visit the Chess School: the first class is free.
